During this process, cancer cells acquire the ability to invade, migrate across the surrounding tissue, enter into the circulation and colonize distant organs. In the present paper, we review recent progress in understanding how the p38 MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signalling pathway participates in the different steps of metastasis. Experimental evidence suggests that tumour cells need to modulate p38 MAPK activity levels to successfully metastasize.
